2019 was a successful year for Dutch startups, with almost 700 million euros raised, a record for the Amsterdam metropolitan area!! (*)

The impressive number was achieved primarily through the success of 3 startups: Picnic, Tiqets and WeTransfer, which attracted a grand total of nearly 350 million euros.

The biggest investment was 250 million euro, granted to Picnic, the online supermarket. Note that this investment is the largest ever raised by a start-up in Amsterdam!!

The dutch company wants to use this investment to create an automated distribution center of 42 000 square meters. About 150000 Dutch households will be able to get their food delivered from this new distribution center.

The second company employs 200 people worldwide, and is a ticket booking platform for museums and cultural places managed by a previous start-up that has now become a major company: AirBnB. Last October, it succeeded in raising 60 million euros.

Created in 2014, Tiqets works with more than 3000 museum groups and attractions like the Louvre in Paris, one of the most visited museums in the world. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, in 2019 the travel and tourism sector represented some $8,8 trillion and will account for 10.4% of global GPD. So if AirBnB and Tiqets work together it could be very interesting.

Finally there is WeTransfer, the Dutch file-sharing platform with 35 million euros raised in August.

Since 2009, the company has more than 50 million users per month in 195 different countries, sharing over 1.5 billion files each month. WeTransfer has 150 employees in Amsterdam and 35 across the US.

The growth of startups in Amsterdam is in constant evolution, which is why 2020 promises to be a successful year for startups.
